In July of this year, we discussed boating accidents in San Diego and the surrounding areas. Although maritime accidents can result in catastrophic injuries, we are happy to see that over the last 10 years, boating accidents have been in decline. Data collected by California’s Division of Boating and Waterways shows that between the years of 2005 and 2015, boating accidents have significantly decreased overall.
In 2005, the state of California reported approximately 800 boating accidents with an unsurprising majority of them occurring between the months of May and September. Flash forward to 2015 and the data shows about 503 reported accidents statewide. Additionally, it seems injuries are waning with only 232 reported in 2015, which is an all time low over the last decade.
Overall this is good news for not only the maritime community, but government tax dollars spent on such accidents and investigations, as well.
Despite Fewer Reported Accidents, Fatalities Remain Steady
One number that cannot be lumped into the lowering statistics for boating accidents is the number of fatalities we have seen over the last 10 years. Although in 2013 and 2014 there were 38 and 39 fatalities, respectively, related to boating accidents in the state of California, in 2015 there were 49 fatalities.
It is important to note that although accidents overall have been in decline, the studies still show that deaths resulting from said accidents are sometimes increased from the prior years. Fewer boating accidents does not necessarily mean less harm is done.
San Diego Boating Accidents are Far From Obsolete
Despite the fact that boat accidents are decreasing, mistakes will inevitably happen and if you are injured in a boating accident, you should take all precaution to document the incident and contact an experienced boating accident attorney.
Sometimes San Diego boating injuries happen because of a boat driver’s negligence, or worse, sometimes the driver is intoxicated. In addition to the driver’s impairment or negligence, it could be that the boat or watercraft malfunctioned in some manner. If this is the case, then you may have a product liability lawsuit on your hands. Any one of these issues alone can be the reason for a boating accident but the resulting injury could also be a combination of several events. An experienced attorney will help you determine exactly how to present your case so that you can claim the damages you deserve.
